SAE J1596:2019 pdf free.Automotive V-Ribbed Belt Drives and Test Methods
The following information covers engine accessory drive layout details and testing methods and includes test configurations, pulley diameters, power loads, and guidance for interpreting test data. This information has been prepared from existing literature, including standards and data supplied by both producers and users of V-ribbed belts.
When the engine is used to drive an external unit equipped with industrial type V-pulleys and belts, it is recommended that the power takeoff pulley on the engine be grooved according to the appropriate industrial standard. These standards are published by RMA-MPTA (Rubber Manufacturers Association – Mechanical Power Transmission Association); ISO (International Standards Organization) and ASAE (American Society of Agricultural Engineers). The grooves in those standards differ from each other in the reference dimensions, and they are not interchangeable with SAE grooves, which are standardized for engine accessory drives as covered in SAE J636 and J1459.
Install the belt on the test fixture and apply the required belt tension. Condition the belt by running it for 5 min without the dynomometer load. Maintain a constant tension during this period by operating with the tension pulley center position unlocked. Stop the machine, allow it to stand for a minimum of 10 min and lock the tension pulley center position midway of the limits of travel during belt rotation.
Failure Criteria – A belt shall be considered failed when it no longer transmits the specified power because of breakage or it exceeds the number of agreed re-tensions. The belt manufacturer and user may agree on other acceptance/rejection criteria.
Length vs. Life Relationship – Generally speaking, the belt test life is a function of the belt length. The relationship shall be according to agreement between the belt manufacturer and user.
Definition of Construction Specifications- The belt manufacturer’s test data on belts of a certain construction specification shall be considered valid for evaluation of all belts of the same construction specification when they are the same with respect to the manufacturer’s cross section dimensions, material specifications, and method of manufacture.SAE J1596 pdf free download.
