O-ring seals are not a part of this specification except for providing a fluid seal during the assembled coupling qualification testing. For the purpose of the qualification testing, O-rings shall conform to AMS-R-25988, Type 1, Class 1, Grade 70 with sizes per Table 1 and AS568. O-ring failures do not necessarily constitute a test failure unless the O-ring is damaged by a test part.
Users shall be notified of O-ring failures and shall make a determination as to the appropriate course of action. If the O-ring was not damaged by a test part, then the user may allow the O-ring to be replaced and testing to be continued. O-ring replacements shall be documented in the test report and retained as part of the qualification process and documentation.
The test specimens shall not exhibit leakage in excess of 3.4.4, or show evidence of any malfunction, during or subsequent to test. In addition, there shall be no evidence of cracking or structural failure. Any crack or structural failure in any component of the assembled coupling is evidence of a failure.
All instances of leakage or specimen failure shall be reported to the users for a determination, in consultation with the manufacturer, of how to proceed. In any event, the test failure shall be photographed and documented. The documentation shall record the failure parameters, the test condition leading to the failure and the manufacturer’s explanation of why the part failed.
Specimens shall withstand the applied pneumatic pressure for 3 minutes at room temperature without any visible bubbles growing or detaching from the test article. The 3 minute test period shall begin after the test article has been mechanically agitated to dislodge attached air bubbles and a further 1 minute dwell allowing for trapped air to escape.
