Six separate marks on one specimen shall be placed on a flat solid surface or a suitable mounting fixture so that the rubbing member will contact the marking. A weight of 2 pounds±0.5 pound shall be applied through the rubbing member to the identification marking. The rubbing member shall be a flat surface of a pencil eraser conforming to the regular grade of A-A-132 (use pink color eraser). When required by the procuring activity,the rubbing member may be a wool felt pad, in lieu of the pencil eraser. Felt pads shall be in accordance with SAE F-1 Type 1 Class 16R1, SAE F-3 Type 1 Class 16R3, SAE F-13 Type 1 Class 9R4, SAE F-50 Type 1 Class 16R1X, or SAE F-3 Type 1 Class 16R3X. One rub shall be made by placing the weighted eraser or pad on the sample and rubbing at least a 3/8 inch length of the eraser/pad along the entire length of the marking. The eraser/pad shall be wide enough to completely cover the characters being rubbed. The marking shall be subjected to the number of rubs specified in Table 2. The marking shall then be visually examined at a reading distance of 14 inches for conformance to the Workmanship requirement of 3.5.
Three specimens marked in accordance with the manufacturer’ s instructions shall be tested.Marker sleeves shall be recovered over a stranded wire as specified in Table 3. Specimens shall be subjected to the number of temperature cycles specified in Table 2. Temperature cycles shall be as follows: 0.5 hour immersed in liquid nitrogen at -196°C followed immediately by 0.5 hour in a +200 °C mechanical convection oven with an air velocity of 100 to 200 FPM past the specimens. After the final cycle, the specimens shall be allowed to stabilize at room temperature.
