Each test sample shall be energized for 12 h as described below.
a. If the test sample provides only one lighting function (high beam or low beam) and not more than one class for low beam, that function’s light source(s) shall be energized for the time specified in paragraph 5.3.5.1.
b. If the test sample provides more than one function or class of low beam, and if each class of low beam has its own exclusive light source(s), the most power-consuming mode of each class of low beam shall be energized successively for the same (equally divided) part of the time specified in paragraph 5.3.5.1.
c. In all other cases, each function or class of low beam shall be energized following the cycle specified below and in the following order: Basic Mode (class C), Town Mode (class V), Limited Access Highway Mode (class E), and Adverse Weather Mode (class W), as applicable. For each mode, the most power-consuming light sources shall be energized as specified below for the same (equally divided) part of the time specified in 5.3.5.1.
a. In case of replaceable filament light source(s) operated directly under vehicle voltage system conditions, the test shall be performed at 6.3 V, 13.2 V or 28.0 V, as applicable, except if the applicant specifies that the test sample may be used at a different voltage. In this case, the test shall be carried out with the filament light source operated at the highest voltage specified by the applicant.
b. If a test sample incorporates a replaceable gas discharge light source(s), the test voltage for the ballast shall be 13.5 ±0.1 volts for 12 V vehicle voltage systems.
c. In the case of non-replaceable light source (filament light sources and/or others) operated directly under vehicle voltage system conditions, all measurements shall be made at 6.3V, 13.2V or 28.0 V, or at other voltages according to the vehicle voltage system.
d. If a test sample incorporates replaceable or non-replaceable light sources that are operated independently from vehicle supply voltage, the test voltages as specified above shall be applied to the input terminals of that device.SAE J2838 pdf free download.
