Manual disassembly of current battery systems is common. As volumes and standardization increase, there will be more value in automated disassembly. Discharge of battery systems prior to service, disassembly, remanufacture, and/or second life varies by process flow, and is determined by each organization involved. There are three general methods for recycling of batteries at end of life: physical separation, pyrometallurgy, and hydrometallurgy. Additional processing or mixing of the process elements is common as the main focus on battery recycling has traditionally been metals recovery. With advances in technology, additional materials in batteries have been recycled, including electrolyte and casing materials.
