SAE J3018:2020 pdf free.(R) Safety-Relevant Guidance for On-Road Testing of Prototype Automated Driving System (ADS)-Operated Vehicles
The knowledge and skills required of those responsible for on-road testing of prototype ADS-operated vehicles vary significantly between early- and late-stage prototypes. Early-stage prototype ADS-operated vehicles may be incomplete in terms of design-intent performance capabilities, and are more likely to require safety- and/or time-critical human intervention to avoid hazardous situations. They may also be equipped with experimental or non-production-intent user interfaces and engineering equipment. As such, fallback test drivers responsible for avoiding hazardous situations during on-road testing of early-stage prototype ADS-operated vehicles require more and more specialized training and instruction than is required for testing late-stage prototype ADS-operated vehicles that are representative of production-intent. In order to ensure adequate skills for fallback test drivers of early-stage prototype ADS-operated vehicles, candidates should be trained and qualified in test driving, including emergency/evasive handling maneuvers.
Late-stage prototype ADS-operated vehicles are complete in terms of design-intent performance capabilities, including automated fallback performance capability for Level 4 and 5- intent prototype ADS-operated vehicles, and should be unlikely to require safety- and/or time-critical human intervention to avoid hazardous situations, and are also equipped with user interfaces that are at or near production-intent. As such, persons responsible for serving as fallback test drivers during on-road testing of late-stage prototype ADS-operated vehicles do not require the same degree of specialized training and instruction that is required for testing early-stage prototype ADS-operated vehicles. In order to ensure adequate skills for fallback test drivers of late-stage prototype ADS-operated vehicles, candidates should be trained and qualified in test driving, although emergency/evasive handling maneuver training is not necessary for testing late-stage prototype ADS-operated vehicles.
IFTDs should receive product specific training in method(s) of real-time supervision of a prototype ADS-operated vehicle, including detailed instruction regarding rules of conduct (e.g., proper placement of hands and feet during testing; no use of hand-held devices; breaks must be taken on a regular schedule, etc.). IFTDs should receive sufficient on-road training to ensure both competent performance and sustained compliance with rules of conduct.SAE J3018 pdf free download.
